In addition to working on the goal of self-control, students set other goals that they wish to achieve during the year.  The symbols for achievement of these goals are gold nuggets (gold rocks the size of an adult thumb); learning to set and achieve goals is a life-long habit that strengthens the ability to become self-directed, which in turn enhances self-esteem.  The treasure jar contains gold nuggets for the class, which fill or disappear from the jar as goals are achieved by the students.  At the end of the year each student will take home her or his gold nuggets earned by achieving goals in a personal goal sack.
